Fair Trade coffee is coffee purchased directly from growers for a higher price than standard coffee. The purpose of Fair Trade is to promote healthier working conditions and greater incentives for farmers by guaranteeing a minimum price for their coffees.
The mission of TransFair USA, a non-profit organization, is to develop and cultivate a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, consumers and the earth. TransFair certifies and promotes Fair Trade products.
To qualify for Fair Trade certification, farmers must belong to an organized co-op. Because these small family farmers get a fair price, they can grow coffee with respect for the community and the environment’s health. Fair Trade certification also includes a strong environmental standard that promotes conservation, agricultural diversification, proper disposal of waste, and responsible land management.
According to TransFair USA, the majority of the Fair Trade certified coffee sold is shade-grown and certified organic.
